Cell Signaling and Phenomics Pharmacology
We had the 90th Kinki Branch Meeting of the Japa- nese Pharmacological Society in Tsu City, Mie Prefec- ture, on October 25, 1996. A total of 95 oral presenta- tions and 452 participants where held, which was the largest meeting ever in the long history of the Kinki Branch Meeting from 1949. Thelast meeting (the 12th Kinki Branch Meeting) in Tsu City was held on October 28, 1956.
In this meeting, we organized special symposium on Cell Signaling and Gene Expression. The program of the symposium was as follows. (1) Opening remarks by Professor T. Tanaka (President of this meeting, Mie University), (2) Intracelluar localization of receptors by Dr. G. Tsujimoto et al. (National Children Hospital), (3) Intracelluar signaling of low molecular weight GTP binding protein Rho by Professor S. Narumiya (Kyoto University), (4) Regulation of calmodulin―kinases by protein phosphorylation by Dr. H. Yokokura et al. (Na- goya University), (5) Cell signaling by calcineurin by Dr. H. Shunton et al. (Kobe University), (6) Protein phos- phorylation―dependent regulation of transcription factor CREB/ATF family by Dr. M. Hagiwara (Nagoya Uni- versity), (7) Tolerance and physical dependence of mor- phine and a single―stranded CRE binding protein by Dr. Kuo C―H.et al. (Osaka University), (8) Signal transduc- tion and gene expression in vascular smooth muscle by Dr. Y.Inadaetal. (Mie University), (9) Role of MAP kinase family in balloon injury―induced vascular intimal thickening by Dr. S. Kim et al. (Osaka City University), (10) Signal transduction of vascular NO producing sys- tem by Dr. Y. Amano et al. (Tokushima University).
This symposium elucidated the role of molecular mechanisms in cell signaling and gene expression under- lying human diseases that have dramatically increased the number of protein targets available for potential drug treatment. Integration of these pharmacological findings with genome medicine would bring a new era of phenomics pharmacology.
